South Sacramento, California
An architectural addition to the medical center building complex whose massing created opportunities for the development of meaningful inside-outside relationships and useful exterior spaces. A window wall in the hospital “Meditation Room,” revealing the Zen Garden outside, invites users to turn their attention outward. The Zen garden can be viewed from other angles in the plaza outside. On one side a garden promenade invites strollers to walk and sit anywhere along the entire length of its seat wall. To the east a court is defined by a tree bosque where moveable tables and chairs offer opportunities for visitors to pause, for patients to mingle, and for staff to relax on their breaks.
